Keypad or app: who actually visits your facility?
A keypad can help visitors without a compatible or charged phone, but shared codes reduce individual accountability. An app may support individual credentials, but check phone compatibility, connectivity, setup and accessibility with the supplier.
Which controllers support a keypad, an app or both?
Ask the supplier to name the supported controller models for each method, the connection used, the monthly licence and the installation costs. Some hardware offers a keypad, an app or both; do not assume a brand supports all three. Unit Manager Pro's native gate and lock integrations are on the roadmap, so do not assume that a brand name, an API or a stored access code means your installed controller will connect.
Test the flat-battery, no-signal and lost-phone cases
For an app, test a tenant with a flat phone, no signal and a new handset. For a keypad, test a forgotten code and a code shared with someone who should not have it. Whichever you choose, write down who can help at night.
Keep keypad and app decisions separate from overdue rent
Choosing a keypad or an app does not change the rules on arrears. Check your agreement and local requirements before restricting any tenant, and remember a payment status in software is not proof a device has acted.
Compare keypad and app access on total cost and tenant effort
Compare the hardware, installation, recurring licence and support costs, then the effort each method asks of your tenants: a keypad needs nothing installed, an app needs a compatible phone and onboarding. A tenant portal for payments and documents works either way.

Frequently asked questions
Is keypad or app access better for self storage?
Neither solves every situation. Keypads suit visitors without a compatible or charged phone, but shared codes reduce accountability. Apps support individual credentials but depend on phone compatibility and connectivity.
Does Unit Manager Pro integrate with my gate or smart lock?
Native hardware integrations are on the roadmap, so compatibility has to be confirmed for your exact controller and workflow. Request a hardware compatibility review in a demo before relying on automated access.
