PIN Access for Self Storage: Codes, Controllers and Costs

By The Unit Manager Pro Team · 10 March 2026 · 4 min read · Updated 24 October 2026

Finger entering a PIN on a metal keypad at a storage gate

A PIN system needs an issuing process, an access policy and a reliable fallback. Choose the controller and the rental software connection together, and get the whole installed cost in writing. Unit Manager Pro handles the booking, agreement and payments that decide who should have a code.

Watch: what to check before choosing storage software for gate and keypad access.

Individual or shared PIN codes: decide how access is issued

Check whether codes identify individuals or are shared, how codes are changed and how departed tenants lose access. Ask the installer to show what happens when the network is unavailable and how emergency entry works.

How much does PIN access for self storage cost?

Costs vary widely by site, so insist on a written installed quote. It normally combines the keypad or reader, the controller, gate or door hardware, installation, power and connectivity, any software licence or integration fee, and maintenance or call-outs.

Ask who supports a fault between the keypad system and your rental software. Unit Manager Pro's native gate and lock integrations are on the roadmap, so do not assume that a brand name, an API or a stored access code means your installed controller will connect.

What happens when the network is down or a code is lost?

Ask the installer to show what the keypad does offline, how a lost or shared code is cancelled and how someone gets out as well as in. Write down who can attend the site and how a customer gets help at night.

Have safety and emergency arrangements reviewed by the installer; a software demonstration is not a gate safety assessment.

Departed and overdue tenants: who loses their PIN, and when?

A PIN that outlives the tenancy is a security gap. Agree how codes are removed at move-out. For overdue rent, check your agreement, applicable law and notice requirements before restricting access: a reminder or a payment status in software is not proof that a keypad has acted.

PIN access for container storage and drive-up yards

At a container yard the gate is often the only electronic control point and each container has its own lock. Decide whether PINs open the yard gate only, document who holds the keys to individual containers, and give customers clear drive-up and access-hour information on your website.

Frequently asked questions

How does PIN access work for self storage?

A tenant enters a code on a keypad at the gate or door and the controller opens if the code is valid. Codes can be individual or shared; individual codes make it easier to see who entered and to remove a departed tenant.

How much does PIN code access cost?

There is no single price. Get a written installed quote covering the keypad, controller, gate hardware, installation, connectivity, any software licence and maintenance.

Does Unit Manager Pro integrate with my gate or smart lock?

Native hardware integrations are on the roadmap, so compatibility has to be confirmed for your exact controller and workflow. Request a hardware compatibility review in a demo before relying on automated access.
