Plan gate entry, unit security and rental administration as connected but separate systems. Start with the exact hardware installed at your site, then decide what the software must automate. Unit Manager Pro takes care of the rental side (online booking, agreements, billing and the tenant portal) and we will review your hardware with you before you commit.

Watch: what to check before choosing storage software for gate and smart-lock access.

Map your gate, reader and controller first

Map the controller, reader, gate operator, power and network connection. Record who maintains each part. A tenant status in management software does not prove the controller can receive or enforce it.

Check hardware compatibility before you buy access control software

Ask for the exact controller model, supported connection, plan, installation cost and responsibilities in writing. UMP’s native hardware integrations are on the roadmap. Do not infer plug-and-play support from a brand name, a stored access code or an API reference. check hardware compatibility before relying on automation.

What Unit Manager Pro handles today

The software side of the customer journey is ready now: customers book online, sign your agreement, set up payment and use a branded tenant portal, while you see every tenant, lease and payment in one place. Physical entry runs on your gate or lock system. Tell us your controller make, model and the actions you need automated and we will confirm what is possible in a 20-minute hardware review.

Test entry, outage and lost-credential recovery

Demonstrate a valid entry, a departed tenant, a lost credential, an outage and recovery. Keep a documented owner response for someone unable to enter or leave. Have safety and emergency arrangements reviewed by the appropriate installer; a software demonstration is not a gate safety assessment.

Keep access policy separate from overdue rent

An overdue balance does not create a universal right to deny access. Check the agreement, applicable law and notice requirements before restricting a tenant. A notice template or payment-status change is not proof that a physical device has acted.

Compare the full installed cost

Include controller and reader, gate work, power, connectivity, installation, recurring software, maintenance and call-outs. Ask which supplier handles faults between systems. Compare a supported integration with the cost and responsibilities of a manual process, rather than assuming every facility needs the same equipment.

Check your hardware, then decide

Send us your controller make and model with the demo request. We will tell you what is available today and what is on the roadmap before you change anything. Start a 14-day free trial to test everything else.

Frequently asked questions

What is self storage access control software?

It links tenant status in your management software to the gate, door or lock that lets people in, so access can be issued, changed and removed with the rental. Whether this works depends on the exact hardware and a supported connection.

Does Unit Manager Pro integrate with my gate or smart lock?

Native hardware integrations are on the roadmap, so compatibility has to be confirmed for your exact controller and workflow. Request a hardware compatibility review in a demo before relying on automated access.

Can I run an unmanned storage facility without access control integration?

You can automate bookings, agreements and billing online, but physical access still needs a working process: hardware, local procedures and a way for customers to get help. Agree the hardware scope before reducing on-site cover.
