Design coverage around the site
Identify entrances, loading areas and other relevant risk points with your installer and insurer. Consider lighting, blind spots, image quality and whether neighbouring property is captured. Avoid unnecessary recording and assess ANPR or audio separately rather than treating them as mandatory.
Set a justified retention period
The ICO surveillance guidance explains purpose-based retention. There is no universal 30-day storage requirement for every facility. Document the shortest period needed for the purpose, deletion controls and how incident footage is preserved where justified.
Control access and requests
Restrict who can view or export footage, secure credentials and record the process for responding to requests. Check current information-rights deadlines and any applicable exceptions with the ICO. Review signage, privacy information and whether a data-protection fee applies rather than quoting an old flat registration price.
Keep responsibilities separate
CCTV monitoring is a hardware/service arrangement. UMP’s rental records do not provide a surveillance service. Combine your security plan with check hardware compatibility, an incident contact and a procedure for preserving relevant records without distributing other customers’ information unnecessarily.

Frequently asked questions
How long should self storage CCTV footage be kept?
There is no universal requirement. The ICO's surveillance guidance expects a purpose-based retention period that you can justify and document.
Does Unit Manager Pro provide CCTV?
No. CCTV is a hardware and service arrangement. Unit Manager Pro holds your rental, billing and tenant records; combine it with a security plan agreed with your installer and insurer.
