A smart lock purchase includes more than the lock itself. Check installation, credential management, ongoing costs and the process for a failed device.

Check door fit, battery life and weather exposure
Ask about weather exposure, door compatibility, battery replacement, offline behaviour and emergency override. Use manufacturer specifications and a site survey; do not assume all devices have the same battery life or cost.
Which smart locks work with your storage software?
Ask for the exact lock model, the gateway or hub it needs, the supported connection to your software and who maintains it. Unit Manager Pro's native gate and lock integrations are on the roadmap, so do not assume that a brand name, an API or a stored access code means your installed controller will connect.
Plan for dead batteries and failed locks
Ask how a dead battery is handled, whether a manual override exists and how long a replacement takes. Decide who attends a locked-out tenant and what a tenant does if their phone is flat.
Overdue tenants and smart locks: keep the policy separate
A lock that can be disabled remotely does not create a right to do so. Check your agreement, local law and notice requirements before restricting access over arrears, and do not treat a reminder as proof a lock has changed state.
Count the full smart lock cost per unit
Multiply the lock, gateway, installation, battery replacement, software licence and call-out costs across every unit, and compare with a padlock-and-manual process. A per-unit cost that looks small multiplies quickly across a large site.
